CCI has been a pioneer in the conservation of cultural heritage
since 1972, delivering a wide range of services and products,
undertaking research, and promoting the proper care and preservation
of cultural property. The Institute has worked closely with
hundreds of museums, art galleries, archives, libraries, academic
institutions, and other heritage organizations to help them
preserve their collections. This knowledge and expertise is
available to organizations and individuals not only in Canada
but also worldwide.
The Institute's projects and activities reflect the evolving
needs of the conservation and heritage communities. At least
2000 requests for assistance from routine inquiries
to complex treatments and research are received annually.
Over the years more than 13 000 objects have been treated,
hundreds of scientific papers have been published, and in
excess of a million publications have been distributed.
CCI's staff of about 90 conservators, conservation scientists,
collection specialists, and other professionals provide a
comprehensive range of conservation, scientific, advisory,
and on-site consulting services aimed at developing cost-effective
solutions to conservation needs. These services cover the
study of the materials and structure of a wide range of objects,
the treatment of many different materials, and the development
of comprehensive preventive conservation strategies to minimize
the risks to collections and establish action priorities.
The creation and dissemination of knowledge is at the heart
of CCI's mission. Information is shared through a variety
of learning opportunities, including interactive workshops
and specialized internships, and also through publications,
the library, and the Web site.
CCI information products are designed to meet the needs of
the conservation and heritage communities, and include CCI
Notes, Technical Bulletins, symposia and colloquia publications,
packaging design software, and a variety of other related
products.
The CCI library is one of the most complete conservation
libraries in the world with more than 10 000 books and 400
journal subscriptions. It provides document delivery, inter-library
loans, and reference and computerized literature searches.
The CCI Web site serves as a gateway to a multitude of conservation
information. Along with details of CCI learning opportunities,
online ordering for CCI publications, and instant access to
the CCI library's catalogue, it offers reports on recent research
and conservation projects, links to conservation, museology,
and other related sites, updates on new publications and projects,
a list of services, a virtual tour of CCI facilities, and
much more.
